Skincare 101: You Are What You Eat!

Wednesday, January 15, 2014

Hi everyone!

So today I'm back with day two of skincare 101 on the blog. I have very recently become a huge believer in you are what you eat. Now I'm not the healthiest eater, hell some may even say I have an unhealthy diet. However I do believe that the foods you put into your body affect your skin.

When I'm I feel my skin acting up or I feel rather sluggish I try to eat a little healthier. So here are the top ten foods I reach for, when I try to boost my skin. There are a bunch of foods that are beneficial for healthy skin, the ones I will be mentioning are the ones I personally like and constantly have in my kitchen and therefore I can give you all my personal opinion on how they affect my skin. Now this may not be necessary to say but if you are allergic to any of the foods I mention, obviously DO NOT eat it.

My top 10 skin boosting foods:

  1. Dark Berries: they are jammed with antioxidants and fiber which aid in fighting against free radicals and aid in digestion. Add them to your cereal, yogurt, smoothies, salads or my favorite way is to eat them alone.
  2. Peppermint: it is potent in healing and calming. This helps with digestion and relives stress, so make some peppermint tea and relax!
  3. Nuts: they are packed with selenium which helps in increasing your white blood cells which aid in fighting infections. They are also potent in minerals such as zinc and iron that are essential for healthy skin. I love adding nuts in my yogurt and on top of pancakes.
  4. Beans: they are high in protein and energy, which is vital for recovery. Loaded with minerals and fiber they aid in digestions and detoxification. I grew up on rice and beans and I have to say that when I'm away at school and I'm not eating beans my skin is not its clearest.
  5. Avocado: is great for keeping skin moisturized. The vitamin E in avocados can support luminous skin, while the vitamin C aids in reducing inflammation. Regularly eating avocados helps your skin generate its own moisture reservoir, therefore allowing for it to moisturize itself. Quick tip [here]
  6. Eggs [mainly the yolk]: they are packed with selenium, zinc, and protein along with other skin boosting vitamins.
  7. Spinach: it is loaded with vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, and vitamin K along with vital minerals such as iron. Spinach can help in the repair of skin and minimizing scars and dark circles. Add a cup of spinach to a smoothie to get your daily dose.
  8. Bananas: are packed with vitamin C and B6 along with antioxidants and manganese which aids in protecting from free radicals. Bananas are also 75% water so they are great for keeping your skin hydrated. Bananas are one of my skincare secrets, my theory is a banana a day keeps the acne at bay.
  9. Mangoes: are alkaline in nature which helps in reducing the amount of acid in the stomach. They are also rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin A, and beta carotene which aids in rejuvenation and giving you glowy skin.
  10. Water: it has been beaten into all of our heads water is good for you! Now water is about the most mundane drink around. So to spice things up add a lemon slice or orange slice to your water. One of my new favorite ways to add water in my diet is through Aloe Gloe which is water with aloe in it, and its doesn't taste awful. You can find it in the organic sections of your grocery stores.

Now with all this being said, I think what is most important for healthy skin is that you get all the nutrients your body needs. So if you're not big on a certain food such as fish which is great for Omega-3 try an Omega-3 tablet. Also try adding a multi-vitamin, but of course you should consult your doctor first.

  4. Hi Francesca,
You post is right on target! So often we slather questionable, commercial skin creams and expensive pharmaceutical preparations on our skin but forget to feed our skin from the inside out. You have created a fabulous post of reminding us how important it is to nourish our skin with proper nutrition. I too, am a big believer in the mantra, "you are what you eat"! Thank you so much for sharing this valuable post with us at the Happy, Healthy, Green and Natural Hop! All the best, Deb
